A PLEDGE OF SUPPORT

On the Sanctity of Life

Preamble

In the 19th century, the atrocity of slavery was tolerated in America. And then, praise God, it was ended.

In the 20th century, the atrocity of the Holocaust was tolerated in Europe. And then, praise God, it was ended.

It is now the 21st century, and the atrocity of abortion is tolerated in the United States. And now, we must end it.

The evils of ages past have been ended by men and women of courage and conviction standing up to defend the voiceless and the powerless against injustice. Significant progress has been made in overriding Roe v. Wade, passing incremental measures that protect life, and revealing the truth about the horrific nature of abortion procedures. It is time now, however, to call for these valiant efforts to culminate in ending abortion once and for all.

We must be prepared with both foresight and fore-action so that when viable paths present, legislation can be passed to end the modern atrocity of abortion the way previous generations have ended the evils of their day. We must not wait until the opportunity arises to pass life-saving legislation to discover there are not enough legislators willing to end abortion decisively and without flinching or stammering. Today is the day to plan and prepare.

As chanted year after year by hundreds of thousands at the March for Life, “We are the pro-life generation. And we will abolish abortion.”

Pledge

As a member of Congress, an elected official, a candidate for public office, a Christian leader, or a voting American, I pledge to support legislation to end abortion.

I recognize that a baby inside the womb is a person in the same way that a baby delivered from the womb is a person. Neither age, location, level of development, nor degree of dependency change the nature of personhood. If that were possible, justice would allow the killing by choice of a 2-year-old toddler, a paraplegic adult, or an ailing and invalid senior citizen.

I affirm that all life begins at fertilization when a new life, unique from its two parents, is formed. I affirm that God is the creator of all life, that He causes the miracle of reproduction and new life, that He forms life in His image and foreknows all the days apportioned for each human before the first breath is taken, and that God alone gives and takes life.

I affirm that laws are already in place to protect life, and I support children in the womb being afforded the same legal protections and defense of their inalienable rights as children and adults living outside the womb, per existing provisions in the 14th Amendment. As our founders intended, I affirm our country’s responsibility to defend “liberty and justice for all.”

I recognize that supporting an end to abortion does not mean withholding care from a woman suffering from an ectopic pregnancy or having suffered a naturally occurring miscarriage. When a mother’s life is truly in danger, the pro-life position is to save as many lives as possible, and obstetricians verify that abortion – the intentional ending of a baby’s life – is never necessary to save the life of a mother, although premature delivery may be needed and may at times result in the tragic but unintentional loss of the baby. In cases of rape and incest, a baby should not suffer for the sin of another. Parenting and adoption are always better solutions than murdering an innocent child, compounding the pain and injustice of the initial crime.

I hereby place my full support behind upholding the sanctity of human life by supporting the eradication of abortion in the United States.

In honor of more than 60 million babies murdered before their first breaths, I affirm this pledge to end abortion and in so doing to join previous generations in ending horrors that should never have been tolerated.
